The Windows source code is one of the most closely guarded secrets in the corporate world. In this Thursday’s Tech Watch, Kristie Lu Stout looks at why Microsoft is handing it over to authorities in Beijing.

He may not be known for sharing, but Bill Gates is sharing his coveted Windows source code with China, the deal that’s raising a few eyebrows.

They’ve said that, you know, here are the source codes, there are going to be specific limitations as to how you can use those source codes. But in addition to those source codes, you can come to Redman, talk to our security people. We will work with you to help you.

A significant gesture, as China has long been suspicious of Windows, Fearful that electronic backdoors could be installed to leak national secrets. In the past, China’s government, and it’s military, have opted for Linux, The free operating system developed by a global community of programmers. China even has its own Linux champion, Red Flag, a Beijing based software house, backed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Microsoft is the dominant player in China, but Linux is gaining ground. According to IDC, China’s use of Windows for servers will increase 8 percent this year, and Linux a whopping 41 percent.

Microsoft, by opening up in a limited way to China, is hoping to blunt that. Of course it’s not opening up completely though, so Linux will still have that advantage over Microsoft in China.
