It started with a poisoned piece of land, farmer mined for tin, and has grown into one of the most successful luxury resort operations in the world. The Banyan Tree Group was founded on the island of Phuket in Thailand in the late 1980’s, by two brothers who knew nothing about the industry. But it didn’t stop them from putting into place a chain that now stretches across 35 locations, mainly in Asia, with plans for many more. Recently I met executive chairman Ho Kwon Ping, or KP as he likes to be known. I began by asking him what drew him from his former life as a journalist to start up a business in a highly competitive industry with no experience.

HO KWON PING, EXEC. CHAIR, BANYAN TREE
I came back to the family business because my father had a stroke. And, I suppose, after a few years in that business, one of the conclusions I reached was that Asian businesses were not going to survive very long, they were going to play a kind of comprador role ----- supplying local labor, local expertise and connections to essentially foreign companies that would bring in the markets or the technology. And my brother is an architect. So it’s sort of part accident, part design. That we were strolling along a beach in Phuket, looking for a place to build a summerhouse and we came across a beautiful piece of land. And from there we decided to experiment with designing a resort and we found that we liked it. And after that initial foray into this business, then I came to realize that it was something we could do seriously. And if we were going to do it seriously, we had to build a brand.

When did you actually develop the concept of the Banyan Tree? This is how it was going to look.

HO KWON PING
When we first started, we were designers and developers of hotels. We let out the management contracts to others. To a tiny chain to first hotel, to Sheraton for example the second one. And when we came to developing our fourth hotel in Phuket, we then decided that we might as well set up our own chain. And if we did so, then we would have really the opportunity to break out of being a hotel owner, but to become a brand owner and a brand builder.

What made you think you could do it better and make money out of it?
HO KWON PING
I think if one had to always do a mental calculation on a sheet of paper, as to whether you can make money or be a success out of it, then you might not ever end up doing anything new. That’s the risk you take with doing something new. You just have to have a feeling that you want to do it very badly, you think you can do it you have to have some degree of confidence. But at the end of the day, it’s just something that tells you, you want to do it very badly and you will give it all you’ve got.
