One resource the United Kingdom does not lack is wind. Now this island nation is attempting to harness it on a scale never seen before. The U.K. government is to lease large areas of the seabed in 3 coastal regions, including the 10 estuary for companies to build offshore wind turbines.
In the U.K., local opposition to wind turbines, criticized for being noisy eyesores, have made it difficult to gain planning permission. That won’t be a problem with the new scheme. The 1,500 new turbines, measuring 100 meters high, will be up to 10 kilometers out to sea. The new scheme will mean jobs too, up to 30,000 by some estimates in the engineering and construction industries.
