Reuters' Dan Sloan now reports that Japanese companies that supply LCD materials and those that use them in the finished products are riding the wave to strong results.

Holiday retailers are already reporting shortages of liquid crystal display TVs, just one product in the multi-billion dollar LCD showroom3 that made 2003 a bumper4 year. Sharp, Japan's largest maker of LCD panels in TVs, saw more than $2 billion in LCD sales in the first half year alone, about one-third its operating profit. Analysts say the main risk for Sharp is a price decline if tight supply conditions ease. JSR, which supplies Sharp and other firms, is a top player in the LCD materials market. The company's president says it's been a good year so far.

Overall this year, business is likely to grow on average about 40 percent year on year.

Brokerage5 Morgan Stanley sees JSR's operating profit at $280 million dollars this year, rising to $370 million next year, based on expansion6 of the LCD market. Yoshida says the flat panel display business is key to JSR's business strategy.
