Nokia’s Gameplay

In this Thursday’s Tech Watch, we’re looking at Nokia’s foray1 into the handheld gaming industry. The world’s biggest mobile phone maker has unveiled its N-Gage mobile gaming device in London and Australia. But analysts say, Nokia’s sparse2 selection of games and length of an expected rollout3, does not pose a threat to Nintendo, the current industry leader. Jim Bowden checks it out.

JIM BOWDEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT
This is the first look at the Nokia N-Gage – it’s a mobile phone, it’s a music player, most importantly it’s a games console4. Now with me is Ilkka Raiskinen, he looks after the entertainment side of things at Nokia. Why is this so important to Nokia? Why are you getting into an area you’ve never gotten into before, entertainment?

ILKKA RAISKINEN, NOKIA
That’s an excellent question, and it’s a fair point there. We believe that mobility and connectivity will be the next big things in the games industry. And we believe that Nokia is a champion of mobility and connectivity, that’s why we believe we have something to give to the games industry.

JIM BOWDEN
Is this a mobile phone that also plays games? Or is it a game player that, oh yes, you can also make phone calls with?

ILKKA RAISKINEN
This is definitely a games device.

JIM BOWDEN
So you’re going head-to-head5 with Nintendo Gameboy, Huge seller. A market that’s already been locked up by one of the biggest players in games. And you think you can get into that market.

ILKKA RAISKINEN
I think we are establishing a new segment. We believe that the connectivity, multi-player capabilities6. are so important. that this will create and define a new segment. So we believe that our target group will be very different from the existing devices7 out there.

JIM BOWDEN
The other thing of course, you have Bluetooth, you have wireless connections. You say that that’s where gaming is going, it’s all about wireless?

ILKKA RAISKINEN
It’s all about connectivity and playing with your friends. That’s what the future is all about.

JIM BOWDEN
And you say this is not for kids. This is not the market you are going for?

ILKKA RAISKINEN
No, this is for a more mature audience.

JIM BOWDEN
Now it’ll be out at Christmas time, what are we going to have to pay for this?

ILKKA RAISKINEN
The pricing at the moment, we are keeping to ourselves for competitive reasons. However, this will be priced so that we will create a volume market, consumer market out there.

JIM BOWDEN
Cause the Gameboy right now is about 80 dollars. You think you’re going to be around that area?

ILKKA RAISKINEN
I think this will be a much richer experience in very many ways, so we won’t be directly compatible with that device.
