As Chinese TV audiences are getting excited for their athletes winning gold medals at the ongoing Olympics, Shanghai Daily carries an article reminding people to keep a cool head to the Gold Rush.

It says winning a gold medal cannot be the only criterion for an athlete, just as the medal tally cannot tell everything about the sporting strengths of different countries.

It took Tan Zongliang, who won silver for the men's 50-meter air pistol shooting as an example. Having been shooting for over two decades and competing in four Olympic Games, Tan's medal at the Beijing Olympics marks his first time on the Olympic prize podium.

The paper then says in the Olympic Games, those who win the highest glory certainly deserve respect, but salutes and applause should also go to all the other athletes who demonstrate the Olympic spirit in their performances. It adds the Olympic spirit is participating and trying to achieve one's best, so every athlete who has tried his or her best deserves equal respect.
