PDA Kickstart
ANCHOR
Palm Pilots, PDAs or Pocket PCs, whatever you call them, digital handheld devices are flooding the market in a bid to prop up falling sales. Kristie Lou Stout reports.
KRISTIE LOU STOUT, CNN CORRESPONDENT
This fly1 girl is on a mission. To bump and grind her way to PDA profits. Sony’s Clie NX70V is on the block. A handheld with a built-in keyboard, rotating screen and digital camera. It’s a Rolodex that shoots movies, and a desperate stab2 at an industry revival.
Since 2001, handheld sales have been slipping. So gadget3 makers from Sony to Palm are cranking out what they hope to be the next runaway hit.
STEVE SAKOMAN, PRODUCT OFFICER, PALMSOURCE
It’s our hope, that given that these are such personal devices, and that everyone’s needs are different, that this diversity will actually act as a kick start to the market and get sales and interest in these types of products moving again.
KRISTIE
The latest crop is dressed to impress. Like this Samsung Nexia, a PDA with a built-in wireless LAN, and a huge five-inch screen. But this little laptop will set you back, 800 dollars. Toshiba is also pushing the PDA up a notch4, with its high-end pocket PC that supports wireless networking. Palm has its own business class device, the Tungsten T, with built-in Bluetooth5 and MP3 playback. Both gadgets retail from around 500 dollars, but is there a market for such pricey6 devices?
MANNY LOPEZ, ANALYST IDC
For the corporate market, if they place it right, then, yes, there probably actually can be a market. That’s what a lot of the high-end vendors are actually trying to target right now.
KRISTIE
The high margins7 may be in the executive suite, but the race for market share is in the hands of the consumer. Enter the Ziar, Palm’s new handheld for the masses. A no-frill address book that retails for just under 100 dollars. It’s priced to please, but it won’t please everyone, since there’s no such thing as the ultimate8 digital assistant.
STEVE
I think much like you can’t ask someone what is the ultimate automobile. I think the situation in handhelds is the same.
MANNY
It’s basically different strokes for different folks. So it depends on what they need, how big they want it, how much they want to spend. It crosses the board, so I think that’s why PDAs, I think, that’s why there’ve been so many vendors out on the market right now.
KRISTIE
A jam-packed9 market that just got even more crowded. PC powerhouse Dell is now the latest contender in low-price digital organizers, with the 200-dollar Axim. Analysts say that’s a good thing. More competition could push down prices and attract first-time buyers. One way for the humble handheld to get it’s grove back. Kristie Lou Stout, CNN Hong Kong.
