In this Tuesday’s ‘Tech Watch,’ we’re looking at high definition1 television, or HD TV. It promises2 twice the resolution3 of today’s televisions, and CD quality sound. It’s also hyped as the greatest advance in broadcasting since the jump to color. The question is, is HD TV ready for primetime4? Well, Kristie Lou Stout has this report.

Those designer gowns will sparkle in all their glory when the Oscars air in high definition for the very first time. A star-studded showcase5 for HD TV.

If you imagine HD TV is probably going to be the largest revolution in television de velopment since we moved from black and white to color, so this is going to be a huge driving factor, and it will revolutionize the industry.

KRISTIE
HD TV offers more than twice the resolution of today’s TVs, along with CD quality sound. And it’s getting ready for it’s close up. According to Media Trade Rody Casbaa, digital television will be the hot industry trend in Asia.

SIMON TWISTON DAVIS, CEO, CASBAA
Digital is where it starts. And digital demand is going to be huge. There will be ------ today there are about 8 million digital TV sets deployed across the region -------- we see that there will be 160 million digital terrestrial6 TV sets, or serviced sets out in the market by 2010. And half of those, we think, could well be in China.

KRISTIE
Where Beijing has mandated7 digital terrestrial services ready by 2008, in time for the Olympics. Subscribers8 of the premium HD TV service would enjoy the best seats in the house. A few consumers are snapping up the sharp sets in Hong Kong, even though there’s no high definition programming.

Most people would like to have their TV for more than five years. So really they’re preparing for the HD broadcasting era in Hong Kong.

KRISTIE
Prices for HD TV sets are falling. But ex perts say the success of the technology will depend upon the contents, and when broadcasters are ready to make the move to digital. The US Federal Communications Commission has promised all TV broadcasts would be in high definition by 2006, and rollouts9 of the service are underway in Japan and Korea.

MIKE
At the moment we're looking at about 10 hours a week of test programming in Korea. And key events like the World Cup last year, actually had a lot of HD TV screening.

KRISTIE
Some fans will stop at nothing to get a clear view of the game. Samsung’s 40-inch flat-screen can set you back around 6,000 dollars. Kristie Lou Stout, CNN Hong Kong.

HD电视机的价格在下降，但是专家们认为，这项技术的最终成功将取决于节目内容，以及电视台何时能够开始播放数码节目。美国联邦通讯委员会已经保证，所有的电视节目都将在2006年前以高清晰度信号播出，而日本和韩国也即将推出这一服务。

目前，我们在韩国每周大约观看10小时的试验性节目，而像去年的世界杯这样的重要活动实际上已采用了很多的HD播放形式。
