The Tian'anmen square in Beijing welcomed millions of visitors who came to visit the so called "heart of the country" during the National Day holiday in the past week.

Thankfully, the quantity of trash left in and around the square is reported to have halved, compared with the same period last year.

The Xinhuanet.com carries a report, pointing out that this phenomenon reflects Chinese people's rising awareness about environmental protection.

According to the report, many tourists in Tian'anmen square took a reusable bag with them. Fewer discarded beverage bottles could also be seen due to security checks.

Meanwhile the rain seen across the weekend prevented tourists from staying in the square for lengthy periods of time, which also contributed to the decrease of trash.

The article also says that the hard work of the environmental and sanitation staff also helped to present a cleaner and more beautiful Tian'anmen square.
