National Day Holiday Is More Than Just a "Golden Week"
"Brisk economic activities" has become the key words of the just ended weeklong National Day holiday, or the Golden Week.
The Chinese leading newspaper, "People's Daily", filed a story says that the National Day holiday should not just be thought of as a "Golden Week" to do business. It suggests people pay more attention to the historical meaning behind this festival.
The article points out that introducing the National Day holiday was originally aimed at increasing the public's awareness about China's history and remembering those who laid down their lives for their country. However, activities relating to Chinese history and culture are far from abundant during the holiday.
It has, to some extent, become a commercial opportunity for business people to make money.
Many children don't even know the history behind the founding of the People's Republic of China on Oct.1st, 1949, the newspaper warned.
The government has introduced three new holidays this year to celebrate three traditional festivals, hoping this would help reinforce the country's traditional culture.
The article urges more cultural elements to be added to the National Day holiday, otherwise, the festival will become meaningless and people will remain unacquainted with their country's history.
