【例】by reason of The committee had to give up the plan by reason of lacking funds.

【用】reason作名词的时候常出现在词组中，如by reason of/that表示“由于，因为”；with reason表示“正当地，合理地”。

【辨】reason，cause两个词都有“原因”的意思。reason强调针对发生的某件事给出原因，有可能并非真实原因；cause则强调某一事件的起因，暗示结果。

【例】The fact that they went back home amazes me.

【派】amazing（adj.令人惊愕的，使人惊叹的）；amazement（n．惊愕，惊异）
【辨】amaze, astonish, surprise, amaze强调心理上的混乱、惶恐，如：He was too amazed to reply; astonish特指不可解释或不可理解的事，如：The news astonished everyone.；surprise是一般用语，表示突然的或出乎意料的。
