How to Be True to Yourself
如何真实地表现自我

My grandparents believed you were either honest or you weren't. There was no in between. They had a simple motto （格言）hanging on their living-room wall: "Life is like a field of newly fallen snow; where I choose to walk every step will show." They didn't have to talk about it — they demonstrated the motto by the way they lived.
我爷爷奶奶认为，一个人要么是诚实的，要么就是不诚实的，不存在非此非彼的中间角色。他们家起居室的墙上，挂有一句简单的箴言：“漫漫人生，好似一片田野雪被新铺；步步脚印，显示我选定的行经之路。”关于这句箴言，他们无须作任何解释——他们生活方式的本身，就印证了这句格言。
They understood instinctively that integrity （正直）means having a personal standard of morality （道德）and ethics （伦理）that does not sell out to expediency （自身利益考虑）and that is not relative to the situation at hand. Integrity is an inner standard for judging your behavior. Unfortunately, integrity is in short supply today — and getting scarcer. But it is the real bottom line in every area of society. And it is something we must demand of ourselves. A good test for this value is to look at what I call the Integrity Triad （三位一体）, which consists of three key principles:

Stand firmly for your convictions in the face of personal pressure. There's a story told about a surgical nurse's first day on the medical team at a well-known hospital. She was responsible for ensuring that all instruments and materials were accounted for during an abdominal （腹部的）operation. The nurse said to the surgeon, "You've only removed 11 sponges, and we used 12. We need to find the last one."
在个人压力面前要坚定自己的信念。有个故事，说的是一家著名医院里的一名手术室护士，她第一天参加外科手术，其职责是在腹部手术过程中，确保所有医疗器械和材料的充分准备和安全使用。该护士对主刀大夫说：“你只取出来11块海绵，而我们总共用了12块，我们必须找到这最后一块。”
I removed them all, the doctor declared. "We'll dose now."

You can't do that, Sir, objected the rookie nurse. "Think of the patient..."

Smiling, the surgeon lifted his foot and showed the nurse the 12th sponge. "You'll do just fine in this or any other hospital," he told her.

When you know you're right, you can't back down.
