"Your guineas were on his land," Mom said. "He told you to keep them off his land."

From daylight until dusk, Mort Hinton plowed his new ground; the boys carried armloads of roots from the field and stacked them in great heaps. By the first of May, they had made this ground like a garden. Then came a rainy season in early May, and they carried baskets of tobacco plants and set them in the newly plowed rows.
从天亮一直到黄昏，莫特?欣顿都在犁新田，他的孩子们把从地里刨出的大量树根收拾起来，堆成了几大摞。到五月一日时，他们已经把地收拾得像个花园了。五月初雨季来临了，他们搬来了几篮子烟草苗，并将它们栽种到刚刚犁过的地垄里。
"They're workers, all right," Pa said.
“哦，他们真是名副其实的干活好手。”爸爸说。
On a dark night about a week later, there was a loud knock on our door. I heard Pa get out of bed and open the door.
大约一周后的一个晚上，传来了一阵敲门声。我听到爸爸起床后打开了门。
I'm Mort Hinton," a voice said. "My wife sent for your wife."
“我是莫特?欣顿。”有个声音说，“我妻子让我来请您爱人过去一趟。”
I'll be ready in a minute," she called out.
“我马上就好。”妈妈大声回答。
Neither Pa nor Mort said another word.
爸爸和欣顿都没再说话。
"I'll be back when everything is all right," Mom said as she hurried off.
“一切没问题后我就会回来。”妈妈在匆匆离去时说。
The next morning, Pa cooked breakfast for us. He muttered about the Hintons as he stood near the hot stove frying eggs.
第二天早晨，爸爸为我们做了早餐。当他站在火炉旁煎蛋时，嘴里反复嘀咕着欣顿家的不是。
"They are friendly enough when they need something over there," Pa said.
“他们需要我们帮忙的时候倒是挺友好。”爸爸说。
We were ready to sit down to breakfast when Mom came home.
妈妈回来时，我们正准备坐下来吃早饭。
"Dollie Hinton's got a healthy girl baby," were Mom's first words as she sat down for a cup of coffee. "They're tickled to death. Three boys and now a girl!"
“多莉?欣顿生下一个健康的女儿。”这是妈妈坐下来喝咖啡时说的第一句话。“他们都高兴坏了。已经有三个男孩了，现在又生了个女孩！”
"What kind of people are they, anyway?" Pa asked.
“他们到底是什么样的人呢？”爸爸问道。
