I wanna say something about Uncle Li, who is a close friend of my father’s. He works as a civil engineering officer in the urban planning commission of our city.
To be more specific, he is a senior officer, whose main responsibility is to approve municipal planning projects, such as road plans and design, and supplementary facilities of railway stations and airports.
His job is useful and important because it directly affects the life of people who live in our city. First and foremost, his job ensures our safety. His daily work involves planning and overseeing construction efforts, in order to make sure structures are constructed in the safest manner. We are all aware that serious design flaws and construction malpractice can lead to serious safety hazards. So it’s important that we have someone who makes sure that the chances of such things happen are minimized.
Besides, his job makes sure our life is convenient and comfortable. Take traffic as an example, a lot of traffic jams are caused by stupidly designed roads and traffic signals. This is partly because the effort we put in urban planning was not in pace with the development of the city. Now with people like him, who are delegated to make improvements, I am confident that we’ll see fewer annoying road designs that make no sense.
In a word, we live in a country with a large population and relatively little land. The government is investing a huge amount in infrastructure every year. His job is certainly an area progressing at a fast pace and of growing importance in China.
