G'day Sydney G'day Australia!

Yes, the Olympic Games are back down under!

Tonight we are gathered together to celebrate the Gamesof the new millennium, the athletes' Games, a unique tradition that can traceits origins back over 2,500 years to ancient Olympia.

Welcome to the athletes of the world!

Welcome to 28 International Sports Federations and 199national Olympic Committees!

Our gratitude must go:

·to the people and government of Australia, New SouthWales, Sydney and all other communities involved, for their friendly welcomeand hospitality;

·to Sydney 2000 also for the excellent preparation of theGames;

·to the Australian Olympic Committee for its dedicationto Olympics;

·to the thousands of volunteers for their exceptionalservices. You volunteers have made the Games possible. Thank you.

·to the mass media for their contribution to presentingthe Games to the world;

·and also to our partners and sponsors for their supportand their belief in the Olympic ideal;

·to all of you, sport-loving spectators and televisionviewers around the world.

Finally I would like to express our respect to all thosewho have made Australia what it is today -agreat country, with special tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople.

The Olympic Games are unique. They unify men of allorigins and creed. The contribution of sport for the understanding and unity ofour society is extraordinary. Sport and the Olympic movement is [are] also anessential part of education, which is the real wealth of any country in theworld.

To all athletes of the world, good luck!

And also I would like to thank Dawn Fraser for being withme this evening.

Now I have the honour of inviting the Governor General ofAustralia to proclaim the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney, the Games ofthe new millennium open.
