The autumn wind rises moaning,

As we march far away for thousands of miles.

Marching thousands of miles away to what end?—

Across the desert we rebuild the Great Wall.

But his was no idea of our own,

It was built by wise past emperors:

They planted here a policy to last thousands of ages,

To secure the lives of their millions of subjects.

How then could we shrink from such concerns,

And rest in calm unconcern in the capital?

Our legions’ standards held high by the river’s northern reaches,

For a thousand miles the battle-flags unfurl.

An endless succession of rivers and mountains appear before us, sink away,

Then plains and steppes stretching to infinity.

The gongs are struck to halt the files and columns,

And drums are beaten to stir the troops:

A thousand chariots, ten thousand horsemen move

And water their horses beside the Great Wall.

Autumn dims clouds from beyond the frontier,

Fog darkens the moon over mountain passes.

Post horses climb up along the steep cliffs,

And beacon fires appear, suspended in the sky.

“What news from the posts at the Great Wall?”—

“The Khan is coming to court; he submits.”

Evil’s turbid aura clears from Heaven Mountain,

And morning light shines on the palace gates.

The troops are discharged and return peacefully,

Our work on the frontiers now is done.

Drink the cup of victory, tell that we have returned!

Our ancestors will learn our deeds before the Temple.
