我们都知道，现在的很多习惯用语都是从赌局中的一些专用语演变而来的。例如Cash in chips, 把筹码换成钱，现在常用来指“鸣金收兵”，play a hand，出牌，现在喻指“尝试”；今天我们要介绍的这个短语when the chips are down 也出自牌桌，赌局之中。Chips有“筹码”的意思。一旦筹码下了，也就没有回头余地了。现在，我们用这个短语表示“在重要关头；到关键时刻；危急时刻”。首先来看一个小对话：

A: I think James’ the right person for the job. 我觉得James适合这个工作。

B: Do you really think he’s the chief material? 你真觉得他是当领导的材料吗？

A: James always appears to be undecided, but when the chips are down he makes up his mind and unswervingly acts on his decision. 总是表现得犹豫不决，但到关键时刻他下得了决心，并且坚定地按自己的决定行事。

很多人平时看着不起眼，表现不突出，关键时刻却很能稳住阵脚。再比如下面这个例子。

Harold complains quite a lot, but when the chips are down he always defends his company and is really very loyal. Harold常常抱怨不断，但在危急关头，他总是护卫他的公司，而且非常忠诚。

与上面两个例子不同的是，有些人平时看着很是斯文无害，但到了危急时刻，在利益面前却可能出手毫不留情。比如：

You’ll see, I’ll show you, that when the chips are down, these civilized people, they’ll eat each other. 你会看到的，我来展示给你看，到关键时刻，这些文明人，会生吞掉对方。
