Jim: I heard that volleyball was invented in America, isn't it?
吉姆：我听说排球运动是在美国发明的，是吗？
Ada: Yes. Probably at the end of 19th century, a physical education director invented it.
艾达：差不多在19世纪末吧，一位体育教学主管发明了这项运动。
Jim: But why the rules of volleyball are quite similar to that of handball?
吉姆：可是，为什么排球的打球规则和手球那么相似呢？
Ada: Good question! I found in the literature that its inventor took some characteristics from handball and tennis. Also, basketball was invented only ten miles away, so volleyball was designed as the indoor counterpart of basketball.
艾达：很好的问题。我查文献的时候发现，发明者吸取了一些手球和网球的特色。另外，离发明地10公里以外的地方就是篮球的诞生地。所以说，排球就是篮球运动的室内对应运动。
Jim: No doubt that it is less rough than basketball.
