TEXT:In Washington, D.C., residents and tourists seek some relief from the heat - splashing in fountains and paddling on the Potomac River - as temperatures reach triple digits. Some tried to sit out the rising temperatures - while construction workers on building sites in the capital city's downtown - tried to stay hydrated. Construction Worker, saying "We have to have a whole, lots and lots of water, that way we can stay hydrated and everything and all that. We don't want to just sit out here and sweat." As West as Nebraska - east to New York and south to Florida, a third of the United States was under a heat advisory on Friday. Many areas of the country have had days of high temperatures - with little rain - contributing to the destructive wildfires in Colorado - and leading to at least one death in Arkansas. The hot weather was expected to stay - in much of the country - through the weekend. Sarah Irwin, Reuters.

2【Hong Kong's dirty habits】香港恶劣习性引人担忧

MhAzNwSfnJg=-QjkB6QC

TEXT:Smog hangs over Hong Kong's skyscrapers, smothering the city's edge as a leading financial centre. Hong Kong's air quality is now among the worst in Asia. And that pollution problem is threatening the city's pro-business reputation. Business leaders say authorities haven't adequately addressed the issue, which costs close to $6 billion dollars in tangible and tangible losses each year. A quarter of businesses polled by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong say the environment is an important issue. SOUNDBITE: AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, ENVIRONMENTAL STEERING COMMITTEE GROUP LEADER, EVAN AUYANG, SAYING (English): "Now if you talk about make or break, would they make it on environment, we would say typically not. However, when people exit Hong Kong ,when they decide; 'I can't stand it anymore,' or 'I don't want to be here anymore', the environment is typically one of the primary factors." Charity worker Suzanne Brucks moved back to Germany after two years in the city. SOUNDBITE: FORMER HONG KONG RESIDENT, SUZANNE BRUCKS, SAYING (English): "Since I've been back in Berlin I haven't had those problems. I have no respiratory problems, no coughing, no headaches, I don't feel sick and I'm absolutely certain it has to do with the, sort of, fresh air in Berlin." Roadside fumes, marine pollution, and smog from tens of thousands of factories in China's nearby industrial heartland all combine to choke Hong Kong. Regional and local incentives have been announced to address the problem. Authorities say a new pipeline will see 50 percent of local power-generating plants run on natural gas. But critics aren't convinced. Some figures suggest that between 2007 and 2010, an average of 1,200 people a year died from heart and respiratory causes, linked in part to poor air. Sarah Charlton, Reuters.

3【Protesters storm Libya election office】抗议者闯入利比亚选举办公室

#NwB@U2.P|

TEXT:Armed protesters storm Libya's national election commission office in Benghazi. The protest comes just a week before the country is set to elect a national assembly that will draw up a new constitution. The protesters say they are calling for greater autonomy in Libya's east. Piles of voting lists, ballot papers and other documents were set ablaze at the gates of the election commission. In May, a self-proclaimed autonomous council for Libya's oil-producing eastern province called on people in the region to boycott the July 7 election. They said it would not give adequate representation to the east. The election is a crucial milestone in shaping Libya's new institutions after the revolt last year that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi. Sarah Sheffer, Reuters
