A GREAT MYSTERY

Easter Island is a great mystery.
复活节岛非常神秘.
It is named Easter Island because it was found on Easter Day.
它被称作复活节岛,因为它是在复活节被发现的.
It is in the Pacific Ocean, 2,200 miles west of Chile.
它座落广阔的太平洋里,在智利西部2,200 米.
On many parts of the island,there are huge robot-like stone statues called Moai.

No one knows for sure how the Moai came to be.

Some think that people from Peru made the Moai thousands of years ago.

Others think that aliens from space made the Moai

and left them as some kind of message.

The island also has many kinds of rock carvings written in a kind of language

that exists only in this part of the world.

And this written language appeared many years ago,

perhaps even before written Chinese took shape!

It is thought that at one time,

the population of Easter Island was over 10, 000.

This destroyed the ecosystem of the island.

Many trees were cut down to plant crops

The people never knew that cutting down the trees would cause an ecological problem.

Pretty soon they started fighting with each other and many of them died.

Those who were left knocked the Moai down.

Then came people from other countries to the island

bringing illnesses that the islanders had never had before

Many more people died and by the 1800s

there were only a little more than 100 islanders alive.

After Easter Island became part of Chile in 1888,the population increased.

Now there are about 2, 000 people living on the island.
现在大约有2000人住在岛上.
People have started raising the Moai again,
人们重新开始把毛埃的雕像竖立起来,
even though no one knows why they are there.

Many people from all over the world come to see the Moai,
世界各地的人们都去看毛埃,
because they are such a mystery. No matter what the reason,

whether they were set up by people from Peru or by aliens from space,

they are still looking out over the ocean mysteriously!

Well, I'm not sure.But what if there are?

Then they may get my message.

Lesson 24 3 Solve the mystery

Rachel came into the classroom Monday morning and there was a note in her desk.
星期一的早上,雷切尔走进教室,有张小纸条在她的课桌上.
It said,if you want to have fun,meet me in room 306 after school.
写着:如果你想知道一些有趣的事情,下课后到306房间来找我.
Rachel looked around.She was the first one in the classroom.
雷切尔看了看四周.她是第一个到教室.
No one else was there.After the first class,she showed the note to Jim and said,
没有其他的人在这儿.上完第一节课,她把纸条递给吉姆并对他说,
"I'd like to know who sent me this note.Did you give it to me?
"我想知道谁把这张纸条给我.是你给我的吗?"
"Jim read the note and told Rachel that he hadn't written the note.

The next class began.Rachel had a difficult time listening to the teacher
第二节课开始了.雷切尔没有心思听老师讲课.
because she kept wondering about the note.
因为她对这张纸条感到很疑惑.
She always cleans her desk before she leaves for home.
她总是在回家之前清理桌子.
Yesterday she didn't see the note in her desk.
昨天她并没有看见有纸条在她课桌上.
This morning,she wasthe first one in the class.
今天早上,她第一个到教室.
There was no one around,so how did the note get in her desk?

After class she asked Li Lei about the note.
下课后她问李雷关于纸条的事情.
He said that he hadn't written the note,either.

Rachel wasn't sure if she should go after class to meet this person.

Maybe it wasn't safe.At lunch she showed all her friends the note.

They all said they hadn't written the note.

They all tried to think of who wrote the note
他们试度在想是谁写的纸条.
and why the person wanted to meet Rachel.

The day went on as usual and finally the last class of the day was finished.
