a candle ,a candleholder ,a big glass jar ,
一支蜡烛,一个烛台,一个大玻璃杯,
a shallow dish with water ,matches
一只盛水的浅盘子,火柴
What do you do?
你要做什么?
1.Put the candle in the candleholder.
把蜡烛放在烛台上。
2.Put the candleholder in the dish.
把烛台放在盘子里。
3.Fill the dish half full of water.
在盘子里放一半水。
4.Light the candle.
点燃蜡烛。
To make a candle burn, you "light" it.
要使蜡烛燃烧,你得点燃它。
What do you use? A match.
你用了什么?一根火柴。
5.Let the candle burn for two or three minutes.
让蜡烛烧两到三分钟。
6.Carefully put the jar over the candle until the top of the jar rests on the dish.
轻轻地将玻璃杯罩在蜡烛上,直到玻璃杯的顶部碰到盘子。
7.Look at the water in the jar.
看玻璃杯里的水。
What observation can you make?

What is happening?
发生了什么?
As the candle burns, it uses up oxygen in the air.
蜡烛燃烧的时候,它消耗了空气里所有的氧气。
When the candle stops burning, it has used up all the oxygen in the air.
当蜡烛停止燃烧时,它烧完了空气中所有的氧气。
The water inside the jar then rises.
然后玻璃杯里的水就上升了。
How far did the water rise?
水会上升多高?
There is about one-fifth oxygen in the air,
空气里大约有五分之一的氧气,
so the water rises and fills about one-fifth of the jar.
所以水面上升,充满大约五分之一的杯子。
Can you see the candleholder in this picture?
看到图片中的烛台了吗?
The candle is pink. The candleholder is gray.
蜡烛是粉红的。烛台是灰色的。
The candleholder is "holding" the candle!
