Ammonia leak in China kills 15
上海冷库液氨泄漏 15人死亡

1VlXiC-t~F,0AUAPK37L

Fifteen people are dead following an ammonia leak at this cold storage facility in Shanghai, according to Chinese state media. Twenty-six others were injured in the accident and eight remain in critical condition. The cause of the leak - which happened Saturday morning - remains under investigation. "At the moment, I don't know the detailed situation," said this firefighter. One witness said he saw workers running from the building at around 11 in the morning. Soon afterwards, a distinct smell reportedly began wafting from the facility. China, the world's second-largest economy, has a poor record when it comes to workplace safety. In June alone, 120 people died when a fire engulfed a chicken processing plant in north-eastern Jilin province.

As U.S. President Barack Obama signaled he would take military action against Syria, deep divisions were on display were in front of the White House. Obama says he will seek Congressional support to take action against the country suspected of using chemical weapons on its own people. Backing from lawmakers is by no means assured.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was unable to persuade the British parliament to back action, welcomed Obama's move, as did the government of French President Francois Hollande, with whom Obama spoke on Saturday. It's unclear how it will be received by Congress.

Stocks end worst month since May 2012
纽约股市面临2012年来最糟糕月份

Wall Street went home for the long holiday weekend on edge as the Obama Administration makes the case for action against Syria. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry: SOUNDBITE: U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY (ENGLISH) SAYING: "It matters because if we choose to live in a world where a thug and a murderer like Bashar al-Assad can gas thousands of his own people with impunity, even after the United States and our allies said 'no,' and then the world does nothing about it, there will be no end to the test of our resolve and the dangers that will flow from those others who believe that they can do as they will." A pledge that there will be no U.S. boosts on the ground - not enough to shake investors' fears. And that added to a dismal monthly performance. August was still the worst month for equities since May 2012.
