Indonesia volcano in new eruptions
印度尼西亚沉睡400年火山喷发
For four centuries Mount Sinabung in Indonesia held its peace. It's sleeping no longer. The volcano in North Sumatra province started erupting in late November. It's been sending out increasingly powerful eruptions ever since. On Tuesday it hurled more choking clouds of ash high in the sky. Resident say some homes and many of their crops have gone.

The National Disaster Management Agency says nearly 22,000 people have been evacuated. Some stay in shelters overnight but come back during the day. Experts monitoring the volcano's activity have issued the highest alert status and are warning people to stay at least five kilometres away from the crater.

Senate votes yeah for Yellen

It is official. Janet Yellen will be the next Fed Chairman- and the first woman to head the U.S. central bank in its 100 year history. Her challenges are unprecedented, says Professor Mark Thoma of the University of Oregon:

I can't think of another Fed Chair that has faced challenges that are as important and as big as she is facing right now."

Forest fires rage in Chile
智利频发森林大火
This is one of nearly 50 forest fires raging across Chile. Most of the fires are burning in the central and southern parts ofthe country. Thousands of residents have fled their homes. Others hosed their properties down in the hope of saving them from the flames. Chile's agriculture minister said the number of fires in 2013 was up more than a sixth on the previous year. He's putting it down in part at least to a drought that's been going on for four years.
这是智利全国接近50起森林大火之一。大部分火灾发生在中部和南部。数千名居民已经逃离家园。其他人用软管浇水灭火，希望能挽救一些财产。智利农业部长表示，2013年火灾数量比前一年增加了超过六分之一。他认为部分原因是已经持续了四年的严重干旱。
