Deadly explosion in central Cairo

A blast in central Cairo killed at least four people and wounded dozens of others on Friday (January 24). Security sources said the explosion near the police headquarters was likely caused by a car bomb. The dead included three policemen. The blast damaged a building and sent smoke rising above the city centre. State television said gunmen opened fire on buildings after the explosion. Islamist militants have increased attacks on security forces, since last July, when the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. It comes before the third anniversary of the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak.

Al Qaeda chief Zawahri tells Islamists in Syria to unite

This is footage purportedly shot by an al-Qaeda linked group in Syria. The video, which can not be independently verified by Reuters comes as the al-Qaeda linked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, claims to have taken control of part of Aleppo. Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri reportedly is calling on rebels in Syria to stop fighting each other. In recent weeks, the small but powerful group has been caught up in clashes with other insurgents in Syria, often triggered by disputes over authority and territory. Meanwhile fighting continues across Syria as negotiators gather in Switzerland for peace talks.Opposition leaders at the meetings say they want to see a future without President Bashar al-Assad. Few expect the talks to result in a breakthrough to end the war. Rights groups say at least 1,400 people have been killed in the past 20 days.

Bus driver attacked by a passenger

A frightening detour for passengers on board a Greyhound bus heading from Los Angeles to Phoenix. Police say a passenger attacked the bus driver early Thursday morning while the bus was going 70 miles per hour.
从洛杉矶开往菲尼克斯的长途公交车上的乘客经历了惊险的一幕。警方表示，周四早上，公交车以70英里的时速行驶时，公交车司机遭遇一名乘客袭击。
SOUNDBITE: PASSENGER CHRISSY SANCHEZ, SAYING: "I woke up to just commotion. And I remember hearing screaming and when I realized it was real, I realized we were not on the road anymore. I thought we were going to die."

The driver was able to fend off the attacker and bring the bus to a stop in the median of the highway.

The impact of the swerving bus injured dozens of passengers. The driver is okay. Police say the suspect and his girlfriend ran away, but were caught and taken into custody.
