To google - as a verb. Of course, everybody's heard of Google the search engine - popular development of the 1990s.

To google,当作一个动词来使用。当然,每个人都听说过谷歌搜索引擎--它在20世纪90年代大众化发展起来。
In fact, in 1999, Google was designated the most useful word by the American Dialect Society, as a verb!
事实上,在1999年,谷歌被美国方言协会指定为最有用的词汇--是一个动词!
'I'm going to google.' 'We are googling.'
'我要谷歌搜索一下','我正在谷歌搜索'。
And, of course, there's all sorts of associated words that have come since - you know, 'we are googlers, if we google!'
自那以后,有许多各种各样的关联词汇出现了--'当我们google(谷歌搜索)时,我们就是googlers(谷歌人)'
And people who google a lot are 'google-minded', and I suppose there are lots of other coinages too.
而那些很频繁使用谷歌搜索的人则是google-minded(有谷歌作风的),我想也有很多其他的新生词。
The word itself comes from a mathematical term, 'googol',
这个词本身来源于一个叫做'googol'的数学术语,
a term meaning 10 to the 100th power, an impossibly large concept, indeed.
其含义是10的100次方,一个不可思议的大概念。
And, of course, the Google search engine has also become impossibly large
当然,谷歌搜索引擎现在也已经变得不可思议的庞大了。
When you go searching for a word on Google, you might get a million hits, or 10 million hits, or a hundred million hits.
当你在谷歌上面搜索一个单词的时候,你可能会获得一百万或者一千万或者一亿的匹配记录。

To google 谷歌一下

Of course, the penalty of success is when you have a word enter the language and it was originally a word that you thought you owned.

当然,成功的代价就是:一个最初你认为归你自己所有的单词,会最终进入语言当中。
In fact, the firm Google is very concerned over this use as a verb,
事实上,谷歌公司对把google作为一个动词来使用忧心不已,
because it is their trade mark - they like to keep the capital letter in the definition, for example
因为这是他们的商标,在定义中,他们愿意保持字母的大写,
if you use it, they say, do use it with a capital 'G'.
他们会说,当你使用它的时候,一定要大写G。
But they've got a problem, I mean, no firm, no matter how big, can control language change!
但是他们已经遇到了一个问题,那就是,无论一家公司的规模有多大,它都不能控制语言的变化!
They're not the first firm to be worried about this sort of thing.
谷歌公司并不是第一家对这类事情表示担忧的公司。
Xerox, once upon a time, was very worried about the way their name had become part of the language as a whole, you know,
很早以前,施乐公司就对他们的公司名称成为了整体语言的一部分而担忧不已,
'I'm going to xerox something', meaning - I'm going to photocopy something.
比如,'I'm going to xerox something'的含义是:我要复印某些东西。
And Hoover was another one, you know, it now means any sort of vacuum cleaner.
另外一个例子是胡佛,Hoover这个词现在指的是所有种类的真空吸尘器。
Of course, Hoover is a particular brand of vacuum cleaner.
当然了,胡佛本身就是一个独有的真空吸尘器品牌。
So Google are a bit worried about this use of their name as a verb, but they won't be able to stop it.
因此,谷歌公司对其名称成为了一个动词有些担心,但是他们对此无能为力。
As I say, no firm, no matter how big, can control language change.
就像我说的,无论一家公司的规模有多大,它都不能控制语言的变化。
