学士（本科毕业）用 bachelor 这个词，硕士学位是 master, 文科称为 arts, 理科则通称为 science。所以，文科学士为 Bachelor of Arts（B.A.）,理科学士是 Bachelor of Science (B.S.), 文科硕士和理科硕士分别为 Master of Arts（M.A.），Master of Science（M.S.）,
博士则无论文理科都用 Ph.D.表示。大家熟知的 MBA就是 Master of Business Administration. 即“工商管理硕士” 。

此外近来在美国又兴起 MPA， Master of Public Administration, 即“公共管理硕士”
