The national college entrance examination, or gaokao, will be postponed for a month to July 7 to 8 due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, the Ministry of Education said.

教育部周二发布通知，指出湖北省、北京市可根据疫情防控情况（epidemic situation），研究提出本地区高考时间安排（come up with their own gaokao schedule）的意见，商教育部同意后及时向社会发布。
今年，全国高考报名人数为1071万。高考被普遍视为中国最重要的考试之一（one of the most important exams），从2003年开始，高考时间改为6月7日和8日。
因“文化大革命”（cultural revolution）中断10年后，中国在1977年恢复高考（resumed gaokao）。1979年至2002年，高考时间为每年的7月。
2001年，教育部决定，从2003年开始，高考时间由实行多年的7月份改到6月份，原因是夏季天气炎热（hot weather），自然灾害频发（frequent natural disasters）。
2019年，参加高考的人数（participated in the gaokao）高达1031万，较2018年增加了56万人。
中国民众经常将竞争激烈（highly competitive）的高考比作过窄桥（crossing a narrow bridge），因为对许多学生，尤其是农村地区的学生来说，进入大学（enrollment at a university）是改变未来的机会（an opportunity to change their future）。
