印尼首都担心禽流感开始宰杀家禽

Indonesian authorities have begun a campaign to kill all poultry in residential areas of the capital, Jakarta, in an effort to stop the spread of bird flu. Some Jakarta residents are welcoming the cull, while others are compaining about the low compensation of just over one dollar a bird - about one third the market price. The governor of Jakarta presided over the slaughter and burning of several hundred chickens, ducks, and pigeons dumped into a pit overnight.

Indonesia's health minister says the ban on backyard poultry will soon extend to at least eight other Indonesian provinces hard hit by the deadly H5N1 virus. Since 2004, 61 people in Indonesia have died from bird flu, the highest tally in the world.

Iraq's government says it has executed two close aides of former president Saddam Hussein for their roles in the killing of 148 Shi'ites in the village of Dujail in 1982.

An Iraqi spokesman confirmed that Saddam's half brother, Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti, and the former head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, Awad Hamed al-Bandar, were hanged before dawn on Monday.

Officials say Barzan's head was severed from his body during the hanging in what they called a "rare case" and an "act of God."

Barzan's son-in-law reacted angrily to the news in an interview with an Arabic television network al-Jazeera. He cursed Iraqi Shi'ites with an insult and accused them of seeking revenge against Sunni Muslims.

The executions come two weeks after Saddam was hanged for the Dujail killings in a chaotic scene that has drawn international criticism.

Greek authorities say a domestic militant group is likely responsible for Friday's rocket attack on the U.S. Embassy in Athens that damaged the building, but caused no injuries. Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras says police are investigating a claim of responsibility on behalf of the Greek left-wing extremist group, Revolutionary Struggle. He says authorities believe the attack was a symbolic act, and an attempt at reviving terrorist activity in Greece.

Authorities say it appears the assailants fired the self-propelled explosive from a construction site directly across the street from the front of the main U.S. Embassy building. The blast shattered some windows of nearby buildings. U.S. Ambassador to Greece Charles Ries says the incident is being treated "as a very serious attack."

赖斯访问中东推动布什新战略 (Rice on Mission to Middle East to Promote New Iraq Policy)

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice departs for the Middle East Friday to push the Bush administration's new policy for Iraq. Rice will hold talks with officials in Israel and the Palestinian territories Saturday and Sunday. She then heads to Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait before wrapping up her diplomatic mission with talks in Germany and Britain.

The secretary of state is hoping to shore up support for President Bush's plan to send an additional 20-thousand troops to Iraq to help quell sectarian violence tearing the country apart. Rice will also attempt to jump start efforts to negotiate a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
