For the wife of Bo Xilai, the deposed Chongqing Communist party chief, it was never supposed to end up like this, writes Leslie Hook in Beijing. Gu Kailai, an ambitious lawyer from a well-connected family, was arrested on suspicion of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood, according to state media.

The downfall of Ms Gu, a glamorous figure with a talent for music and foreign languages, has sent shockwaves through Beijing’s political elite and is the biggest twist yet in the leadership saga that has unfolded as Mr Bo is ousted from power.
Ms Gu’s arrest also sheds an uncomfortable light on the roles played by Chinese leaders’ wives, who are often active in business and can trade on their husbands’ connections.
On Tuesday, Beijing announced that Ms Gu and her servant were in custody and were “highly suspected” of murdering Heywood, who was close to the Bo family and was found dead in a Chongqing hotel room in November.
Ms Gu’s background and career reveal a woman who was at times incredibly successful and at others battled with depression.
Born to privileged parents who were both revolutionary heroes, Ms Gu grew up during the Cultural Revolution and had to fend for herself after her parents and four older sisters were jailed. During that time the young Kailai, whose name means “embrace the future”, dropped out of elementary school and worked as a bricklayer and as a butcher, according to biographical accounts on state-run websites.
To improve her circumstances she took up the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese lute, and her musical talent won her a spot in the Beijing Film Orchestra. She even recorded the soundtrack for a documentary film about Communist leader Mao Zedong, considered a great honour at the time.
The lute brought Ms Gu to her future husband Mr Bo in 1984, when she travelled to the small prefecture where he was party secretary for an arts project. The couple were soon married and their son Bo Guagua was born in 1987, shortly before they moved to Dalian.
When her son was eight Ms Gu founded a law firm, named after her given name, Kailai. In English, Ms Gu often went by Horus, the Egyptian god of war.
The firm had offices in Beijing, Dalian and Zhengzhou and handled commercial disputes in China as well as in the US, UK, Japan and Korea.
Ms Gu’s most high-profile case came when she helped a Chinese company to victory in US courts in 1997, then a rare win for a Chinese plaintiff in the US.
Ms Gu wrote a book about the experience, which became a popular TV serial in China and portrayed Ms Gu as a tough fighter who never gave up.
“In Dalian we have a saying that even if you have to smash your wok and sell it for scrap iron, you still have to keep going and win the court case,” she said in an interview with the newspaper China Reading Weekly. “It’s a process of struggle and striving for victory.”
However, as her husband rose to prominence, Ms Gu gave up her legal career. A receptionist at the law firm, which is now known as Ang Dao, said Ms Gu had left “a long time ago”.
In recent years Ms Gu had suffered from severe depression and paranoia and sought medical treatment for her illness, according to a person close to the family. Several years ago she was at the centre of a corruption investigation, the outcome of which is unknown.
Last month her husband described her to journalists as a loyal housewife: “I’m really touched by her sacrifice,” he said.
