美国的文化教育一向很看重学生的综合素质。四年大学生涯,大学生的身份不仅仅是学生,他们把大学视作从学生到成人的转型期。他们的活动已不仅仅限于青葱校园内,他们通过互联网出售创意、从大一开始积累各种经验:自我心态的调整、处事能力的提升到与人相处的技巧。在生活中,既要当好演员,也要当好观众;在大学中,既要当好学生,也要当好初涉社会的预备人才。Get out of the library. You can have a degree and a huge GPA and not be ready for the workplace. A student should plan that college is four years of experience rather than 120 credits.
第一,走出图书馆。就算有了学位和很高的GPA, 你也不见得就为工作做好了准备。作为一名学生,应该把大学生涯看作是四年人生经验而非只是一堆学分来好好计划。
Start a business in your 1)dorm room. It's cheap, Google and Yahoo are dying to buy your website, and it's better than washing dishes in the 2)cafeteria.

Get involved on campus. When it comes to career succes emotional 3)intelligence—social skills to read and lead others—gets you farther than knowledge or job 4)competence.

Play a sport. People who play sports earn more money than 5)couch potatoes, and women 6)executives who played sports 7)attribute much of their career success to their athletic experience. You don't need to be great at sport you just need to be part of a team.

Separate your expectations from those of your parents. Otherwise you wake up and realize you're not living your own life.

Try new things that you're not good at. Ditch the superstar mentality that if you don't reach the top, become president, get an A+, or get promoted to editor-in-chief, then the efforts were worthless. It's important to learn to enjoy things without getting 8)recognition.
第六,尝试一些你并不擅长的新事物。抛弃那些名缰利锁:觉得如果不能成为第一名,当不了学生会主席,拿不了A+的优异成绩,或晋升到总编的位置,那么一切努力都是无意义的。重要的是学着去享受那些无需他人赞赏肯定的事情。
Define success for yourself. Society defines success very narrowly. Rather than defining success as financial gain or 9)accolades, define it in terms of individual interests and personal happiness.

Make your job search a priority. Jobs do not fall in your lap, you have to chase them. Especially a good one. It's a job to look for a job. Use 10)spreadsheets to track your progress. And plan early.

Learn to give a 12)compliment. The best compliments are specific. Practice on your professors. If you give a good compliment the recipient will think you're smarter: a big payoff in college, but a bigger payoff in the work world.

Use the career center. These people are experts at positioning you in the workforce and their only job is to get you a job. How can you not love this place? If you find yourself thinking the people at your college's career center are idiot it's probably a sign that you really, really don't know what you're doing.
第十二,好好利用求职中心。这些专业人员会帮你在劳动市场中找准定位,他们的唯一工作就是帮你就业。你怎能不爱上这个地方?如果你觉得在大学求职中心里面的人是傻子,那很可能是因为你根本不知道自己在干什么。
Develop a strong sense of self by 13)dissing colleges that reject you. Happy people have a more durable sense of self and aren't as 14)buffeted by outside events. When bad things happen, don't take it personally. This is how the most successful business people bounce back quickly from setbacks.
第十三,增强自我意识,敢于鄙视那些没有录取你的大学。快乐的人拥有更持久的自我意识,不容易被外界的事情击倒。当不幸的事发生,不要往心里面去。大多数商业成功人士就是这样从挫折中迅速重拾自信的。
Get rid of your perfectionist 15)streak. It is rewarded in college, but it leads to insane job stress and an inability to feel satisfied with your work.
第十四,戒掉完美主义的脾性。在大学,力求完美会使你有所回报,但在工作中则会产生令人抓狂的工作压力,并使你无法对你的工作产生满足感。
Work your way through college. Getting involved in student organizations count and so does feeding children in 16)Sierra Leone or sweeping floors in the chemistry building. Each experience you have can grow into something bigger. A great bullet on the resume for a junior in college.

Make to-do lists. You can't achieve dreams if you don't have a plan to get there.
