What are your thoughts on the younger, emerging film directors coming out of China?
《华尔街日报》：您对中国新近崛起的年轻一代电影导演有何看法？
I really hope the younger generation of film directors, who don't share the same background with my generation, would do something good in the near future. They just focus on the individual's life, which is very interesting, but probably they need to find an excellent way to tell the story. The audience sitting in the dark is not sitting there like prayers, like Roman Catholic believers. They want to enjoy something.
陈凯歌：我真的希望和我们这一代有着不同背景的年轻一代电影导演能在最近出些好东西。他们只关注个人的生活，这一点非常有意思，但是他们可能需要找到一个很好的方法来讲故事。坐在暗处看电影的观众并不是像祷告者、像罗马天主教信徒一样坐在那儿。他们想获得一些享受。
This is my experience: What you want to say is not more important than what people want to see. If you can provide something people really enjoy watching, then you will be accepted as a film director.
我的经验是──人们想看的东西和你想说的东西同样重要。如果你能提供一些大家真正喜欢看的东西，那么你的电影导演身份就会被大家接受。
What do you hope to accomplish going forward in the industry?
《华尔街日报》：未来您希望在这个行业中实现什么目标？
My goal is first of all to satisfy the need of the Chinese audience first and to tell them something I feel will be important. I didn't see myself as someone who would survive in the entertainment business, but now I tell myself I'm no different. I'm in this business and I have to do something to make audiences feel excited.
陈凯歌：我的目标首先是要先满足中国观众的需求，然后告诉他们一些我觉得重要的东西。过去我不认为自己是一个能在娱乐业生存下来的人，但是现在我告诉自己我和别人没什么区别。身处这个行业，我必须做一些让观众觉得兴奋的事情。
So I'm facing a lot of different choices and I may do an action film as well in the near future, maybe something with funny kung fu why not [laughing]? But I believe I can do something serious to change society and the culture.
现在我面临许多不同的选择，最近我也有可能导演一部动作片，也许是融入搞笑功夫元素的戏，为什么不呢（陈凯歌说到此处笑了起来）？但是我相信自己能够做一些严肃的事情来改变社会和文化。
What's your opinion of new technology, like 3-D, that is shaping the film market?
《华尔街日报》：您如何看待决定电影市场发展方向的新技术，比如说3-D？
I like American action films, but I just like the good ones. There's an Oscar-winning picture called 'French Connection' that's an action film and I love it because it's a fresh idea. It's not just killing and fighting but manages to touch people's hearts and moves people through relatable characters. Popcorn films are always very popular because people don't want to think. They walk in the theatre to relax and they don't want to think about anything, so that's why artistic films eventually lose in the market because people don't want to think that much. And that's natural.
陈凯歌：我喜欢美国的动作片，但是我只喜欢优秀的动作片。有一部曾获得奥斯卡奖的动作电影叫《法国贩毒网》(French Connection)，我非常喜欢它，因为它是一个新鲜的理念。它不只是打打杀杀，而是设法去打动大家的心，通过让人觉得和自己有关的角色来感动大家。爆米花电影总是非常受欢迎，因为人们不愿去想问题。他们走进电影院是为了放松，不愿去思考任何事情，这就是为什么艺术电影最终会在市场失利的原因，因为大家不愿意去想那么多。这很自然。
But if people don't want to think and you don't see cinema as a philosophy you can find another way to tell a very interesting story. Maybe that's a way to attract people coming in. I'm still very curious about what will be the next step for Hollywood to create new style action films.

I enjoy watching films like 'Avatar,' because I believe it's like a dream, a dream that will take you to another planet. But you can know from it the American spirit. So what's the Chinese spirit? Why in the last decade has everything changed so much? Why do people feel like there's a chance to have a new hope? What can we do to help people have a dream? That's very important for us to say.
我喜欢看《阿凡达》(Avatar)这样的电影，因为我认为它就像一个梦，一个会把你带到另一个星球的梦，但是你还是能从中了解美国精神。那么中国精神又是什么呢？为什么过去十年一切发生了这么大的变化？人们为什么会觉得有机会去拥有新的希望呢？我们可以做些什么来帮助人们拥有梦想？这些是我们需要表达的非常重要的东西。
How does the political system in China affect the environment for film making?
《华尔街日报》：中国的政治体制对电影创作环境产生了什么样的影响？
Mr. Chen: I have been very optimistic about life, because I know that life is short. Whatever happens, I ask myself to keep a smile to the world.
陈凯歌：一直以来我对生活都很乐观，因为我知道生命短暂。无论发生什么，我都要自己一直微笑着面对世界。
We still have the same problem we had three decades ago. As filmmakers, we feel tired. There's this awkward situation where it is difficult to express everything you want the way that you want.
我们仍然面临和30年前一样的问题，作为电影创作人员，我们感到疲惫。现在存在这么一种尴尬境地，你在其中很难用你自己想用的方法来表达每一件事情。
But this is what it is, and it will take a long time to improve.

Back thirty years ago, it would be impossible to create a private production company. No way. You could only work with state-run studios. Now it is natural, there are private producers and funds to help you make films.
回到30年前，创办一家私营制作公司是不可能的事情。绝无可能。你只能和国营制片厂合作。如今这已经是很自然的事情了，有私营制片公司和基金来帮助你制作电影。
In a big country, change takes a long time. So I'm enjoying being alive, having children, listening to different voices, and hope to continue to make films for another 20 years!
