Shares in Alibaba surged by 38 per cent on their first day of trading, valuing Jack Ma’s Chinese ecommerce juggernaut at more than $230bn and making it the 17th largest publicly traded company in the world.
The stock – which trades under the ticker BABA – closed at $93.89, compared to the $68 per share offer price late on Thursday. The shares began trading on Friday at $92.70, the largest opening rise for an IPO over $10bn, according to Dealogic.
About 100m shares changed hands in the first 10 minutes, as the price briefly hit $99.70 before dipping back below the opening price to around $90 in lunchtime trading. By day’s end more than 271m shares were traded.
The closing price gives Alibaba a market capitalisation of $231.4bn, giving the 15-year old company a greater market valuation than JPMorgan, Toyota and Facebook, but less than Google.
Shares in Alibaba opened almost 27 per cent higher at $92.70 on their debut on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday, catapulting it into the world's top 20 largest publicly traded companies.
The Chinese e-commerce company sold shares for $68 on Thursday night, making its initial public offering the third-largest in history with $21.8bn raised.
The FT reported that Alibaba has been focused on how the shares would trade once they were sold and were prepared to leave money on the table.
Having transformed retailing in China, founder Jack Ma has taken Alibaba public as the company eyes overseas expansion.
Relatively unknown outside China, Alibaba generates the bulk of its revenues, which hit $2.5bn last quarter, from the adverts that businesses put on its marketplaces.
They are Taobao, a consumer-to-consumer market place, and Tmall, which lets big brands sell directly to buyers.
