Angela Merkel and François Hollande have pledged to strive for an end to fossil fuel pollution as part of a “profound transformation” of the global economy this century.

The leaders of the EU’s two largest economies said they had “firmly decided to take all efforts to reach an ambitious, comprehensive and binding” global climate deal at a UN meeting of almost 200 countries in Paris in December.

“We will strive to decarbonise fully the global economy over the course of this century,” the German and French leaders said in a joint statement in Berlin after talks with other country representatives.

World leaders have been reluctant until now to spell out so clearly the idea of including a goal to end carbon emissions in the Paris agreement, a move some analysts say could mark a turning point in the decades-old UN climate talks.
“One of the key functions of the agreement is to send a clear message that the pace and scale of decarbonisation are going to increase,” said Jennifer Morgan, global director of the climate programme at the World Resources Institute, a US environmental research group.
“We haven’t had that clarity up to this point,” she said, adding Ms Merkel was expected to raise the issue with leaders of the US and other large economies when Germany hosts the G7 meeting in June. The German chancellor also called for global greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced by at least 60 per cent by 2050 from 2010 levels. Both leaders backed a worldwide carbon emissions trading system, adding there was a need for “concrete action for a profound transformation of the world economy and society”.
Although renewable energy sources have boomed in Germany, now providing more than a quarter of the country’s electricity needs, its exit from nuclear power has led to a greater reliance on fossil fuels. High gas prices and cheap coal has meant that Germany has leant on the most-polluting fossil fuels as partners for its renewables.
Lignite, or brown coal, a highly polluting fuel, provides more than 25 per cent of Germany’s electricity, according to figures published this year.
