基本概况
Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee，the well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader. It was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. At present it is the only key comprehensive universify directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education in the five special economic zones and is one of China's higher-level universities designated for the state key construction of the“Project 211”and the“Project 985”.
厦门大学是由著名爱国华侨领袖陈嘉庚先生于1921年创建的，是中国近代教育史上第一所华侨创办的大学，也是我国唯一地处五个经济特区的国家“211工程”和“985工程”重点建设的高水平大学。
Over the past eighty-five years，as the result of painstaking efforts by several generations of faculty and graduates inspired by the school motto:Pursue Excellence，Strive for Perfection，Xiamen University has accumulated rich experience in offering its educational programs. The university presents its features as a university “in the Special Economic Zone on the coast near Taiwan and with close ties with overseas Chinese.”Following its fine tradition of“loving the motherland and the university"，it has enjoyed a fine reputation both at home and abroad. Since its founding，over 140 000 students have graduated from the university，and over 50 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS ) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE)have studied or worked at Xiamen University.
1985年来，在“自强不息，止于至善”的校训激励下，经过几代人的坚忍不拔的努力，学校积累了丰富的办学经验，以“位居台湾海峡经济特区，与华侨联系紧密”为鲜明特色，坚持“爱国爱校”的光荣传统，成为一所在国际上有广泛影响的综合性大学。建校迄今，已先后为国家培养了14万多名本科生和研究生，在厦大学习、工作过的两院院士达50多人。
With its 18 schools containing 45 departments，Xiamen University offers 70 undergraduate programs，14 first-category Ph. D. degree programs，17 second-category master degree programs，131 doctorate specialties and 217 master specialties. The university has 13 state key disciplines，12 post-doctoral research stations，5 national educational centers for talents of the basie scientific research. There are 19 disciplines listed in the nation“Project 211”，and 11 innovation platforms and bases listed into the second stage of the nation“Project 985”.
学校设有研究生院和18个学院(含45个系)，拥有70个本科生专业，14个博士学位授权一级学科，17个硕士学位授权一级学科，131个专业可招收培养博士研究生，217个专业可招收培养硕士研究生;拥有13个国家级重点学科，12个博士后流动站，5个国家基础科学人才培养基地，19个学科项目列人国家“211工程”建设，11个创新平台和基地被列为国家“985工程”二期建设。
Xiamen University has over 4 900 staffs members，including 2 213 full-time faculty and professional researchers，1 308 of whom are full and associate professors,18 are academicians of CAS and CAE. Moreover, 7 faculty members of Xiamen University are seated on the State Council's Academic Degree Appraisal Committee.Among the full-time teachers and researchers，there are 354 doctoral supervisors,8 have been listed in the national“millions of Telenis Programs" 44 have been included in the Ministry of Education's training program for the“Leading Figure for the New Century";What is more，there are 18 winners of the Nation Foundation of Outstanding Young Scientists，9 specially invited professors and 4 lecture professor of“Cheungkong Scholars Program"
学校教职员工4 900余人，专任教师及专业研究人员2 213人中教授、副教授1 308人，两院院士18人(含双聘院士8人)，国务院学科评议组成员7人，博士生导师354人，列人国家“百千万人才工程”人选8人，列入教育部“新(跨)世纪优秀人才一培养计划”44人，“国家杰出青年科学基金”获得者18人，“长江学者”特聘教授9人、讲座教授4人。
The university now has a total enrollment of over 33 000 full-time students on campus，including 18 989 undergraduates，10 591 master students，1 810 doctoral students，and over 1 200 overseas students and students from Hongkong，Macao and Taiwan regions.
学校现有在校学生33 000余人，其中本科生18 989人，硕士生10 591人，博士生1 810人，外国留学生及港、澳、台学生1 200余人。
At present, the university has 3 campuses which cover a total area of about 524. 5 hectare with 1.3 million square meters of floor space，situated at the foot of the green mountains，facing the blue sea and encircling Xiamen bay. The university library holds 4 090 000 volumes of books. The scope and level of its high-speed information network on campus is rated at the top of all universities in China.
学校三个校区共占地524. 5公顷，校舍建筑面积130多万平方一米，校园环绕厦门湾，依山傍海。图书馆藏书409万册。校园高速信息网络建设的规模、水平居全国高校一前列，并成为CERNET2的主接点之一。
Xiamen University is now making great strides towards its goal of“building a high-level university well-known both at home and abroad".
目前，厦门大学正昂首阔步朝着“世界知名的高水平研究型大学”的奋斗目标迈进。

校主生平:陈嘉庚先生(1874一1961)
An overseas Chinese legend，Mr Tan Kah Kee's legacies have inspired many in Southeast Asia，by Comrade Mao Zedong as the“Flag of the Overseas Chinese and Glory of the Nation.”From humble immigrant origins，he rose to a prominence，which few can match. Best remembered as an eminent entrepreneur, social reformer, political activist, philanthropist，community leader, and educationist,he died at the age of 87 in Beijing on August 12，1961 and was accorded a national funeral by the Chinese Government for his contribution to the society.
陈嘉庚先生是伟大的爱国主义者、杰出的华侨领袖、著名实业家、教育家和社会活动家，被毛泽东誉为“华侨旗帜民族光辉”。陈嘉庚于1874年10月21日出生在福建省同安县集美社(即现厦门市集美区)。17岁往新加坡从父经商，后独立经营菠萝罐头厂、米店和橡胶园等。1916年后，以橡胶和胶制品业为主，鼎盛时期其销售网遍及全球，谓新马树胶王国的四大开拓者之一，成为驰名海内外的大实业家。陈嘉庚于1961年8月12日在北京病逝，终年87岁，国家给予以国葬的哀荣，灵枢运回集美，安葬于“鳌园”中。
