A lack of sleep or broken sleep can make us grouchy and everything seem foggy and difficult the next day. But the dangers associated with not getting enough sleep extend far beyond that - and can be very serious.

Sleeping through the night may be the sort of worry you primarily associate with knackered parents, but adults should pay attention to their own sleeping patterns. The reason being, waking up during the night could double your risk of suffering from a deadly heart attack.
The same applies to those of us who toss and turn a lot in our sleep too. A Japanese study put together these findings, after monitoring the sleeping habits of nearly 13,000 OAPs.

Not only did those who woke up in the middle of night are 99 per cent more likely to have a heart attack, but there was also a 37 per cent raised risk of having a stroke, The Sun reports. A link was also established between other poor sleep symptoms and an increased chance of ischaemic heart disease (a heart attack or severe angina).

A 52 per cent risk of this was found in those who needed longer than half an hour to fall asleep. Those who got less than six hours of sleep a night were found to be 24 per cent more likely to have a heart attack.
As for a cause, scientists have said it's not yet been determined if bad sleep patterns cause heart problems, or are a symptom. Speaking at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona, lead researcher Dr Nobuo Sasaki, from Hiroshima University, said: "Our results support the hypothesis that sleep deterioration may lead to cardiovascular disease. Poor sleep in patients with ischaemic heart disease may be characterised by shorter sleep and."
While the odd sleepless night is normal, Dr Metin Avkiran, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, said: "It could be a sign of something more serious if this becomes the norm. Making some small lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy balanced diet, reducing alcohol intake, and managing your stress levels, will all help to give you the best chance of a good night's rest."
