Dog fur is great at keeping dogs protected in the cold, but in the warmer weather it can be a burden. Dogs, unlike humans, try to deal with heat by panting. They have some sweat glands in their footpads, but this only helps a little bit.

A dog's main way to cool down is by panting, but how they pant can differ. When they're in warmer weather dogs usually start with a slightly opened mouth light panting. As they get warmer it changes to fully open mouthed panting with a swollen tongue that hangs out to the side. If your dog is doing this, get them to a cool and shady spot straight away - somewhere with a fan or air conditioning. Give them water too.

If you're out for a walk and your dog is heading off to lie down more than usual this is a clear sign that they are feeling the effects of the heat. A racing or irregular heartbeat is a sign your dog could be overheating. The increased heart rate is due to the body trying to pump as much overheated blood as possible away from vital organs, where it can cause damage. If your dog is experiencing this take them to a vet's immediately.
