影音时尚口语:爬出泥沼的勇气之《风雨哈佛路》(1)

可可口语的朋友们大家好。年终岁末是我们最愿意规划未来一年生活的时候。打算学点这个,打算做点那个。总之,目标是让生活变的更好。这个时候如果让您想象一个人,特别是一个孩子的生活可以糟到什么程度,也许您会觉得有点扫兴,不过,比较之下,才会有鉴别。当你知道有人可以在那样艰苦的状态活着,并且没有丧失希望的时候,那我们,除了觉得幸运之外,也能感受到些许和命运抗争的力量。

电影《风雨哈佛路》改编自真人传记,讲述的就是一个童年在贫穷饥寒中度过,母亲吸毒并染上艾滋病,父亲酗酒,进入收容所,小女孩儿最后不得不流浪街头。但这并不是她既定的命运,她用决心和努力,爬出了泥沼并最终成为哈佛大学的一名学生。

我们即将听到的这一段,是Liz被迫去学校后的两个场景。一起来听。

Liz: I was always the smelly kid in class. Lisa stood on the bucket to shower, but daddy laughed at her doing, said she had to marry a doctor. She has so many expectations. I didn't have any expectations. So therefore, I guess, I stunk. And I itched from lice and it burned between my legs. My teachers were always telling not to finch it. And my underwear. I didn't know what to do about underwear. I just wore it until it fell apart.

Teacher: All right! People! Thank you! Rest is over.

Liz: My teeth ached. I was hungry.

Teacher: Settle! Thank you!

Liz: The teacher's words never seemed to reach me. Words just seemed... fall on the floor.

Teacher: Hold me the test. There's no point that ...

Liz: No, I'll take it.

Teacher: But you've been here what? For 3 times this month?

Liz: No, I'll take it. It doesn't look that hard. ……

Teacher: Oh, Liz, stay here. You do smell, you know? Doesn't your mother tell you that you gonna ...

Liz: No, no. It's my fault. I just forget.

Teacher: OK. Well, when you have shower tonight, you wanna, you wanna wash back here? Ah, I've been saving some things for you. There…and here. How did you do that? You're never in school.

Liz: I read a lot.

Teacher: Yeah? What do you read?

Liz: The Encyclopedia. The lady upstairs, Eva, she found them in the dumpster, the whole set ... well, except for the Urdas. If you asked me about Urdas, I would have got it wrong. I was just lucky.

Teacher: Oh, Lizzy! You have to come to school.

Liz: OK.

Teacher: No, I mean it. Look, it's ridiculous you're way too smart not to be here. I don't understand why don't come?

Liz: I will. How could I tell her that school made me sad. I didn't know how to talk to her. I didn't know how to talk to anyone. My house wasn't a place you could come out of and be normal.

Teacher: We have to come every day. OK? If you don't, and I have to call Child Welfare. That's not a threat. It’s a promise.

一个几乎没有洗过澡的孩子一定是smelly的。之前和大家介绍过,很多名词,动词后都可以通过加y的形式,变成相应的形容词。Smell, 闻,smelly, 发臭的。再比如,hand,手,加y变成形容词handy,意思是“就在手边的;方便的”。

姐姐爱洗澡,被嘲讽为想要的太多,期待太多,应该嫁个医生。自己没有什么期待,so therefore, I stunk. Therefore, 因此,为此。Stunk. Stink的过去式,表示“发臭”。

Liz几乎没怎么去过学校,以至于老师不肯将考卷给她。因为there is no point that…there is no point in doing sth. 表示“做某事是毫无意义的”。比如,There is no point in arguing about it. 争论这个根本毫无意义。

但Liz的考卷上是鲜红的一百分,这让老师惊讶不已。放学后留下了她。说话的口吻也温和了很多。她告诉Liz,You do smell, you know? do 在本句中用作强调用法,可以翻译为“的确;确实”。再比如: I do love you. 我确实是爱你的。Do 这个用法有现在时,过去时两种,后面直接跟动词原形即可。再比如:I did close the window. 我确确实实关了窗户了。

小女孩儿能考这样的成绩得益于the whole set of Encyclopedia. 一整套的百科全书。小小年纪,又在那样的生活环境下还能坚持阅读,也就难怪老师说you are way too smart,Way too, 有very的意思。表示程度。比如:This meeting is lasting way too long. 这个会持续的时间太长了。

尽管生活如此艰辛,Liz心中最大的渴望还是母爱,希望自己有一天可以被呵护,被关爱。然而母亲的去世让这个希望彻底破灭。面对灰暗到没有出口的未来,Liz做出了选择。下期,我们一同听听这个女孩儿为改变生活要做出怎样的努力。
