一.avoid：vt. 避免，逃避，[律]使无效，撤销
【词语用法】
avoid后可接动名词，不可接不定式。
You had better avoid reading in the train.
你最好避免在地铁上阅读。
句中的reading不可改成to read。
avoid指“避免（成功）”，若是企图避免却失败的，不可用avoid。
I avoided meeting him, but somehow bumped against him.
句中我企图避免见他，却还是撞上了，不可单用avoid，需把avoided改成tried to avoid。
指得注意的是，“避免”和“防止”有这本质上的区别，两者不可混用。
【错句举例与错句分析】
错句：He picks early to avoid the wine becoming fat and blowsy.
纠正：He picks early to prevent the wine becoming fat and blowsy.
翻译：为了防止葡萄酒过浓，过重，他采摘得比较早。
分析：区别“避免”和“防止”，不能说避免葡萄酒过浓，而是防止。
【例句用法】
1.He is a fugitive from justice trying to avoid being caught by the police.
他是逃犯，正试图逃避警方的追捕。
2.If we are to avoid defeat we need a change of leadership.
我们要避免失败的话，就要换掉领导人。
3.To avoid the city center, turn right here.
如果要避开市中心，请从这里向右转弯。
4.She tried to avoid answering my questions.
她试图避而不答我的问题。
5.The boy avoided punishment by running away.
那个男孩逃跑来逃避惩罚。
二.prove：v. 证明，检验，结果是，发酵
【词义辨析】
prove, certify, demonstrate, establish, testify,
prove: 普通用词，指通过某种手段或方式提供证据以验证某事物真实与否，某结论正确与否等情况。
certify: 较正式用词，多指有签字盖章的、合符法律程序的书面证明。
demonstrate: 指通过推理、辩论、实验或以实例来确定事物的正确与否。常用于理论、学说、定律等的证明上。
establish: 指证实事实或理论的真实性与正确性，使其能长期存在或为人们所接受。
testify: 较正式用词，既指出庭作证，提供证据，又指为某人或某事的是否真实提供证据或证明。
【例句用法】
1.She claimed that money had been wasted and our financial difficulties seemed to prove her point.
她断定那笔钱用得不是地方，而我们在经济上遇到的困难却也似乎说明她言之有理。
2.The old methods proved best after all.
采用老方法结果反而是某事物最好。
3.He has proved his courage in the battle.
他已在这场战斗中证明了自己的勇气。
4.Perhaps this book will prove to be of some use to you in your studies.
也许这本书会对你的研究有用处。
