经典对白之三：10-17-3 想说爱你不容易

故事梗概

在这一集中，得知 Rachel 要离开，在Central Perk 工作的Gunther 向 Rachel 表白他的爱意，但 Rachel 委婉地拒绝了他。Ross其实当时也打算向 Rachel 表白他的爱意，但当他目睹了 Gunther被拒一幕之后，他就没有勇气说出口，因为，他怕自己会落个与 Gunthet 同样的下场。

Ross: Because she's just going to shoot me down. You guys saw what happened with Gunther. That did not look like fun.

Phoebe: How can you compare yourself to Gunther? I mean, sure, he's sexy in a more obvious way. You have a relationship with her, you slept together last night.

Ross: Yeah, and she still wants to go! It's pretty clear where she is.

shoot down　这里不是“击落，击毙”或者“击败，驳倒”的意思，而是指“断然否定，坚决拒绝，彻底否定” (reject badly without any sympathy)。

例如：
My heart was broken，because I plucked up courage to ask her out，but she shot me down．(我的心都碎了。因为，我鼓起勇气约她出去，却被她断然拒绝。)

下面再介绍几个表达“拒绝，不接受”的词和短语，以及它们的不同。

首先，refuse (通常隐含着坚决和不太友善的味道。) 例如：The superstar refused to discuss questions of privacy．(这个超级巨星拒谈隐私问题。)

其次，reject (表示因为不令人满意、有缺陷或无用而抛弃。它暗示无条件的拒绝。) 例如：He again offered himself for enlistment and was again reiected．(他再次要求应征入伍，结果再次被回绝了。)

下一个，spurn (to spurn is to reject scornfully or contemptuously; 指轻蔑或鄙视地拒绝)。例如：The more she spurns my 1ove，the more it grows．(她越是轻蔑地拒绝我对她的爱，这爱便越是增长。)

如果我们想表达“委婉地拒绝，婉言拒绝，有礼貌地拒绝”，可用“to decine”或“to turn down”，decline　意为“有礼貌地拒绝”　(to decline is torefuse courteously)
例如：
I declined their warm invitation，in that I really COUldn't make it．(由于实在脱不开身，我婉言拒绝了他们的热情邀请。) 又如：I don't mean to hurt him，but he is realy not my type，and I gotta turn him down．(我不是有意要伤害他，但是他真不是我喜欢的类型。我必须婉言拒绝他。)
