cereal 谷类食物

cereal常用作复数，指谷类或加工过的谷类食物，如“麦片”等。“中国粮油食品进出口公司”中的“粮”字译成英文时用的就是cereal这个词（China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Import and Export Corporation）。

Cereal这个词是从一位女神的名字来的。公元前496年，罗马的农村遭受特大干旱，教士们就求助于女巫占卜，占卜的结果是要立一个新的女神 Ceres，并即刻向她摆上供品，这样她就会给大地带来雨水。从此以后，Ceres就变成了庄稼的保护神，最早收获的谷物要献给她作供品。Cereal就是从拉丁语cerealis变化来的。意即“of Ceres（属于谷物女神的）”
