It was evening when the shepherd came home, a mighty giant, twenty feet or more in height.

Ulysses shuddered, but he answered bravely, We are no pirates, mighty sir, but Greeks, sailing back from Troy.

We have come to beg hospitality of you in the name of Zeus. It is but idle talk to tell me of Zeus, said the giant.

We Cyclops pay no attention to gods. Where did you leave your ship?

Ulysses knew that he planned to take the ship and break it. Therefore he answered craftily,

We have no ship, for Poseidon, god of the seas, drove it on a rock, and we are all who escaped the waves.

Polyphemus made no answer, but caught up two of the men, killed and ate them, taking huge drinks of milk between.

The others could only pray to Zeus for help. When the giant had ended his dreadful meal,
