第129课 不朽的灵魂
SCENE -- CATO, alone, sitting in a thoughtful posture; in his hand, Plato's book on the immortality of the soul; a drawn sword on the table by him.
场景--卡托，独自坐在那里，一副若有所思的样子，他手里拿着一本柏拉图论灵魂不朽的书，旁边桌子上放着出鞘的宝剑。
Cato. It must be so. Plato, thou reasonest well!
卡托。一定是这样的。柏拉图，你的推理好极了！
Else whence this pleasing hope, this fond desire, this longing after immortality?
这样愉悦的希望和温柔的渴求不朽之后还有渴望吗？
Or whence this secret dread, and inward horror, of falling into naught?
又或是从那里，这个恐怖的秘密和精神的恐惧化为乌有？
Why shrinks the soul back on herself, and startles at destruction?
亡灵为何躲到她自己身后颤抖，惊愕于如此的毁灭？
'T is the divinity that stirs within us;
这是我们内心激荡的神性；
'T is heaven itself that points out an hereafter,
这是从此以后将注意力引向自身的天堂，
And intimates eternity to man.
向人类暗指永恒的真实。
Eternity! thou pleasing, dreadful thought!
永恒！你这令人愉悦，令人恐惧的想法！
Through what variety of untried being,
通过各种各样没有经过尝试的人，
Through what new scenes and changes must we pass?
莫非我们必须经历新的场景和改变？
The wide, unbounded prospect lies before me:
宽广无限的景色展现在我们面前；
But shadows, clouds, and darkness rest upon it.
但是阴霾、乌云和黑暗与它时刻不分离。
Here will I hold. If there's a power above us,
我会在此驻留。如果我们头顶有一种力量，
(And that there is, all Nature cries aloud Through all her works) he must delight in virtue;
（那就是，大自然冲所有的造化大吼）他必定醉心于良好的品德，
And that which he delights in must be happy.
令他陶醉的必将带来幸福。
But when or where? This world was made for Caesar.
但是，什么时候？或什么地点？这个世界是为恺撒而造的。
I'm weary of conjectures -- this must end them.
我厌倦猜测，必须终结无止境的猜想。
Thus am I doubly armed: my death and life,
所以我要武装起来：我的死亡和生命，
My bane and antidote are both before me.
在我面前，不快的生活和解决的方法互相矛盾。
This in a moment brings me to an end;
很快，这些就会取走我的性命；
But this informs me I shall never die.

The soul, secured in her existence, smiles at the drawn dagger and defies its point.

The stars shall fade away, the sun himself grow dim with age, and Nature sink in years;
繁星会淡去光芒，太阳也会衰老并无光，大自然沉沦于岁月更迭；
But thou shalt flourish in immortal youth,
但是，你将在不朽的青春中焕发光彩，
Unhurt amidst the war of elements,
在战争中不受损伤，
The wrecks of matter, and the crush of worlds.
在事物毁灭和万物破碎中依然完好。
