第134课 幸福
Oh, sons of earth! attempt ye still to rise,
啊，大地之子！还在竭力升起，
By mountains piled on mountains, to the skies?
通过层层山峦，直达云霄？
Heaven still with laughter the vain toil surveys,
天堂仍在嘲笑徒劳的虚妄，
And buries madmen in the heaps they raise.
在他们堆起的土堆里，掩埋疯子。
Know all the good that individuals find,
理解个人找到的所有美好事物，
Or God and nature meant to mere mankind.
或许上帝和大自然只对人类意义深远。
Reason's whole pleasure, all the joys of sense,
理性的全部乐趣，感性的所有快乐，
Lie in three words,—health, peace, and competence.
都归属于--健康、安宁和能力。
But health consists with temperance alone;
但是健康只包含性情；
And peace, O virtue! peace is all thy own.
安宁，啊，道德！全在你自身。
The good or bad the gifts of fortune gain;
运气的礼物，有好与坏之分，
But these less taste them as they worse obtain.
这些没有品位之物，得到只会更糟。
Say, in pursuit of profit or delight,
唉，追逐利益或是快乐，
Who risk the most, that take wrong means or right?
谁会冒最大风险，而不管方法对错？
Of vice or virtue, whether blest or curst,
邪恶或是美德，祝福或是诅咒，
Which meets contempt, or which compassion first?
哪一个该遭轻蔑，哪一个又先得到同情？
Count all th' advantage prosperous vice attains,
把邪恶的作为所获得的当作成功的优势，
'T is but what virtue flies from and disdains:
这只是道德遭到抛弃的结果：
And grant the bad what happiness they would,
赞同恶行会给他们带来幸福，
One they must want, which is, to pass for good.
他们定会渴望，让罪行成为善举。
Oh, blind to truth, and God's whole scheme below,
啊，对真相视而不见，上帝的计划全盘落空，
Who fancy bliss to vice, to virtue woe!
有谁想对邪恶说一句祝福，对道德的敌人！
Who sees and follows that great scheme the best,
谁看到和承认伟大的构思是最好的东西，
Best knows the blessing, and will most be blest.
最好的人知晓祝福的重要，它将带来幸福。
But fools the good alone unhappy call,
但是愚人以为美德只会让人不快，
For ills or accidents that chance to all.
因为所有人都会偶尔患病或遭灾。
Think we, like some weak prince,
想想，倘若像虚弱的王子一样，
the Eternal Cause, Prone for his favorites to reverse his laws?
永恒的事业会轻易让追随他的人更改法律？
Shall burning AEtna, if a sage requires, forget to thunder, and recall her fires?
如果圣人要求，难道埃特纳火山会忘记电闪雷鸣，忘记召唤她的火焰？
When the loose mountain trembles from on high,
当震颤的山峰在高处颤抖，
Shall gravitation cease, if you go by?
难道你经过，它就会停止震颤？
"But sometimes virtue starves while vice is fed."
但是，有时美德会挨饿，恶习却得到滋养。
What, then? Is the reward of virtue bread?
之后呢？美德的奖励是面包吗？
That, vice may merit, 't is the price of toil;
那么，邪恶也是值得的，这就是苦难的代价；
The knave deserves it when he tills the soil,
当流氓耕种土地时，他有资格得到面包，
The knave deserves it when he tempts the main,
当流氓诱惑别人做坏事时，他配得上这辛劳。
Where folly fights for kings or dives for gain.
愚蠢地为国王浴血奋战，或潜到水底寻找金银财宝。
Honor and shame from no condition rise;
荣誉和羞耻没有先决条件；
Act well your part, there all the honor lies.
演好你的角色，所有荣誉都在面前。
Worth makes the man, and want of it the fellow;
值得造就这样的人，渴求追随者；
The rest is all but leather or prunella.
剩下的只是皮革或毛织品。
A wit's a feather, and a chief a rod,
智慧就像羽毛，重要的是羽毛的茎秆，
An honest man's the noblest work of God.
诚实的人是上帝最高贵的杰作。
One self-approving hour whole years outweighs of stupid starers, and of loud huzzas.
自我肯定的时刻，胜过愚蠢的看客和大声的赞许。
Know then this truth (enough for man to know),
明白这个事实（对人来说已经足够），
"Virtue alone is happiness below."
只有美德还称不上幸福。
The only point where human bliss stands still,
人类的福祉聚集于此，
And tastes the good without the fall to ill;
感受真善的真谛，就不会堕落到犯罪；
Where only merit constant pay receives,
只有坚持不懈才能有回报，
Is blest in what it takes and what it gives.
在得到和施舍中感受幸福。
