Hi Faith, what's on your mind today?
I was listening to the famous Elton John song "Rocket Man" recently.
Right! Where he sings: "And I think it's gonna be a long, long time."
I can tell that you are not a singer but yes, those are the words he sang.
It makes me wonder: why did he use "be going to" instead of "will?"
这让我不禁要问:他为什么用“be going to”而不是“will”?
Although there are some differences between these two structures, they are sometimes used in place of one another.
Let me guess: they are used in place of one another when making predictions about the future.
That's right. If you watch or listen to an American weather report, for example, you might hear either of these two sentences: Satellite imaging suggests it will be cloudy tomorrow.
Satellite imaging suggests it is going to be cloudy tomorrow.
So when Elton John sang "it's gonna be a long, long time," short for "it is going to be a long, long time," he was making a prediction about the future.
But that brings up a question: Why didn't he sing "I think it will be a long, long time...?"
I think it will be a long, long time...?”
The only person who can know that is the songwriter.
But perhaps the structure "be going to" sounded better to the songwriter's ear.
Just to be clear: there are situations in which "will" and "be going to" can be used differently.
需要说明的是:在某些情况下,“will”和“be going to”的用法不同。
But when we make predictions about the future, they can be used in place of one another.
And that's Everyday Grammar.
