ANCHOR

It’s the biggest case of identity fraud in this country’s history. At least 30,000 victims ---millions of dollars stolen --- all of at the work of three men. Alan Dawns Frank has the story.

ALAN DAWNS FRANK, CNN CORRESPONDENT

All the 30,000 victims of the nation’s largest identity theft scheme had in common were credit reports. Reports on file with three of the nation’s largest credit report agencies were stolen in wholesale batches and sold for 60 dollars a piece. And federal authorities say the men who unlock those reports and sold them to a Nigerian fraud ring and others was Philip Cummins, a 33-year-old former help desk operator at a Long Island-based credit security firm.

KEVIN DONOVAN, ASSI FBI DIRECTOR

The defendants took advantage of an insider’s access to sensitive information in much the same way that a gang of thieves might get the combination to the bank vault from an insider.

ALAN

Cummings worked for a little more than a year at Teledata Communications Inc., a company that provides about 2,000 other companies with encoded access to credit reports. But after he left TCI in early 2000, Cummings allegedly downloaded thousands of credit reports using TCI account codes for customers such as Ford Motor Credit Cooperation. Ford first reported the scheme last spring, after discovering bills for 15,000 credit reports it had not ordered.

JAMES COMEY, US ATTORNEY

Bank accounts of victims were depleted, addresses were changed on accounts, new checks were ordered, new ATM cards were ordered, new credit cards were ordered, new lines of credit were opened and quickly drained.

ALAN

One scamp artist used this building in the Bronx as a mail drop for checks and credit cards ordered with stolen identities.
