Hello! This week on Ask a Teacher we answer a question from Yoo Yoo in Somalia.

大家好!本周《名师答疑》,我们回答来自索马里的优优的问题。

What are the differences between "any longer," "anymore" and "no longer?"

any longer、anymore、no longer有什么不同?

Dear Yoo Yoo, Thank you for writing to us.

亲爱的优优,谢谢你的来信。

These three expressions are similar.

这三个表达是相似的。

So, they may cause some misunderstandings among learners.

因此,它们可能会给学习者造成一些误解。

Although the three expressions have the same meaning, you should be careful how you use them.

虽然这三个短语的意思相同,但要注意它们的用法。

They must be used in different kinds of statements or questions.

它们必须用在不同类型的陈述句或疑问句中。

Let us look at them more closely.

让我们更仔细地看看。

"Any longer" is an adverb, that is, it gives us more information about the action in a statement or question.

any longer是一个副词,也就是说,它在陈述句或疑问句中提供关于动作的信息。

It means that something that was once true or possible is not now true or possible.

意思是曾经是真的或可能的事,现在不是真的或可能的。

Here is an example:

这里有一个例句:

Because of the coronavirus, we can't sit close together in the movies any longer.

由于冠状病毒,我们在电影院中不能再紧挨着坐在一起了。

Note that the sentence has a negative (can't).

注意,这个句子中有一个否定词(can't)。

You will only find this expression in questions or statements with a negative.

只有在疑问句或否定陈述句中才能用这个表达。

Here is a question using "any longer."

这里有一个使用any longer的疑问句。

"Don't" is the negative.

Don't表示否定。

Don't you go to that store any longer?

你不再去那家商店了吗?

"Anymore" is an adverb when written as one word, meaning that something that was once true is not true.

当写成一个词的时候,anymore是副词,意思是曾经真实的东西现在不是真实的。

For example, Chris and Sandy are not dating anymore.

例如,克里斯和桑迪不再约会了。

When people write "any more" as two words, it describes an amount of something.

当人们把any more写成两个词时,它描述的是某种东西的数量。

Here is an example:

这里有一个例句:

Do we have any more ice cream?

我们还有冰淇淋吗?

If you are unsure, look for the negative and for the location of "any more" – is it at the end?

如果你不确定,看看有没有否定词,以及any more的位置是不是在句尾。

Here is the same question with the adverb "anymore:"

同样的疑问句用副词anymore:

Don't we have ice cream anymore?

我们不再吃冰淇淋了吗?

This question has a negative, "not", and "anymore" is at the end.

这个问句有一个否定词not,而且anymore在句尾。

Finally, the expression "no longer" appears in statements or questions without other negative words.

最后,短语no longer出现在没有其他否定词的陈述句或疑问句中。

The word "no" is a negative already.

no已经是否定的了。

Here is one example:

这里有一个例句:

I will no longer eat pizza before going to bed – it gives me bad dreams!

我不会再在睡觉前吃披萨了--这会让我做噩梦!

Note that "no longer" can appear in the middle of a sentence.

注意,no longer可以出现在句子的中间。

I hope this answers your question, Yoo Yoo, so you will no longer have problems with these three expressions.

希望回答了你的问题,优优,这样你就不会再对这三个表达产生疑问了。

And that's Ask a Teacher. I'm Jill Robbins.

以上就是本期《名师答疑》,吉尔·罗宾斯为您播报。
