For the past several nights the campus stadium at Central China Normal University in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei Province has been dotted with straw mats that serve as beds for over 300 people.
All of the 300 are family members whose children are entering their freshman year.
They have come considerable distances to register. As they cannot afford to stay in a decent hotel in the city, the university has offered them free shelter, and basic living necessities such as drinking water, towels and quilts, reports today's Wuhan Morning Post.
"We must ensure that no family members of our new students have to sleep outside, " said deputy director Yang Xinguo, who is in charge of logistics at the university.
Special subsidies are handed out to students from poor families. The university also pledged that no one would be denied at the school gates because of economic hardship.
As a new school year kicks off, many have found it a great headache to financially support their children in their quest for higher education, which usually costs nearly 10,000 yuan per year.
The lack of employment opportunity after graduation also dilutes the sense of joy of having successfully entered university after the harsh national entrance examinations.
Last month, parents who sent children to Tsinghua University, one of the top universities in China, slept on the campus playground as hotels in Beijing are expensive. |
