Reality TV and entertainment shows have attracted many Chinese viewers. As the ratings competition heats up, many entertainment programs turned to traditional or ethical cultures, trying to add some special flavors to their programs. For example, a TV show named A Grand Stage has invited some celebrities to perform traditional Chinese operas.
Such cultural shows have rated highly, but in an article carried by the Shanghai based Wen Hui Daily, some experts warn that traditional culture and popular mass entertainment can not be simply grafted together.
Chen Kelun, vice curator of the Shanghai Museum, told the paper that some entertainment programs just take traditional culture as a way to extract profits and stray away from essence of traditional culture.
Although experts admit TV programs can help the audience to know about traditional culture in some way, they are worried that those cultural shows will serve as a virtual destruction, because the shows are merely focusing on shows, not culture.
The paper ended by saying that if TV producers want to make a "real cultural program", they should first respect culture, and develop a deep understanding of it.
