Hosni Mubarak under house arrest after release

Egypt's ousted president, Hosni Mubarak, has been transferred from Tora prison to the Maadi military hospital in Cairo, where he will be held under house arrest.

Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi ordered Mubarak under house arrest to avoid more complexity in the politically divided country. Earlier, Mubarak’s lawyer had said the former leader’s stay in prison had exceeded the maximum pre-verdict detention. The move appeared designed to ensure that he appears in court next week for a separate trial.

The 85-year-old Mubarak is banned from travelling abroad as he still faces a retrial on charges of involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 unrest that eventually toppled him. His court case will resume next week.
