Tomorrow, on Wednesday October 8th, a Supreme Court case will be open arguing that chimpanzees should be recognized as a person, on behalf of Tommy the pet chimpanzee.

Tommy belongs to Patrick Lavery and is being kept in a metal cage, and that is not cool so says the Nonhuman Rights Project.

They feel that Tommy and all chimpanzees should be recognized as people, and therefore entitled to a writ of habeas corpus, or the right to due process.

And as a result, should be allowed to live in a sanctuary that mimics his natural habitat.

Last December, the Supreme Court rejected the case, but the organization has asked for an appeal.

And so, tomorrow they will appear in front of five judges to argue their case.

Now, to be clear, if this case passes this does not mean that chimpanzees will be considered human, nor is the organization fighting to achieve human rights for chimpanzees.

They're only arguing that chimps are highly intelligent, self aware, autonomous beings that fit the profile of a persons in the eyes of the law.

But what is really interesting about this case, is the fact that if it passes, it could open the door to personhood for all kinds of different animals, like dogs and cats.

Veterinarians may be concerned about malpractice lawsuits, which would obviously become more complicated if dogs and cats are granted personhood.

Similarly, farmers are concerned that if cats and dogs are granted personhood, cows and chickens could be next, and then the livestock industry could no longer be.

Not to mention, scientists may no longer have the ability to use animals in research, which is used in basic science and clinical treatment.

Other countries, like Spain and Germany, have faced similar debates and ended up awarding apes and another animal special rights into their constitutions.
